The Institute of Civic Engagement is a resource to promote the development of mutually beneficial learning by opportunities. Opportunities include designing and conducting civic engagement projects through the Institute's Action Team for self-directed interns, campus and community events exploring current issues and classroom visit to recognize the benefits of volunteering and practice active listening skills as a way of improving communication effectiveness.

Narrative outlining how student participation in civic engagement programs was determined:

Civic engagement is measured as successful completion of courses that qualify as “applied learning” courses. Such courses include the application of course material to a setting outside the classroom and the application of what is gained from the applied experience to academic learning (paraphrasing the SUNY definition). As a required part of the course, successful completion of the course indicates participation in civic engagement. The Office of Civic Engagement and Institutional Research and Assessment developed a spreadsheet looking at student participation in applied learning courses. The percentage of participation in 1 or more courses from the spreadsheet is copied below.

5.2 Employee community service program

The college presents service awards for employees engaged in outstanding service to the profession and community 

  • Faculty: Outstanding Achievement in Service Award - This competitive award is given to faculty whose record of service is deemed outstanding among others on this campus and is above and beyond what constitutes normal service activity at the College. Such excellence in service is defined as a distinguished level of service sustained above the normal expectation for advancement in rank. The nature of service must be sustained for at least five years and may include accomplishments in administrative work, service to off-campus populations, contributions to institutional change, institutional research, outreach to the community, external reviews, or other venues.

Red Cross Blood Donation - Employees are able to recieve compensation for work missed due to blood donation when Red Cross comes to campus for blood drives.

5.3 Support for public policies to advance sustainability

Narrative outlining how individuals affiliated with the institution have helped develop local or regional public policies that address sustainability challenges:

Energy Manager Matt Brubaker is serving on two different committees and working groups which have worked on the development of public policies addressing sustainability. Matt is an advocate for renewable energy while serving on the advisory committee for the large-scale renewable energy procurement project. Within the group there are eighteen SUNY's and four private institutions. The group has met with multiple state authorities to advocate and advise on renewable energy development and procurement strategies.  Additionally, he is part of a NYSDERDA working group working to develop and offer feedback on the Higher Education Decarbonization Playbook. Matt is a subject matter expert and technical advisor for the group.  This group is working to develop a resource manual, case studies and other associated resource materials for institutions for higher education as well as other similar organizations to develop decarbonization planning methods.
