The outdoor recreation major in the Recreation, Parks and Leisure Studies Department allows students to focus on different aspects of the outdoor recreation/education field. Outdoor leadership, natural resource recreation management, camp management and environmental and cultural interpretation are designated concentrations in this major. This major, as well as the concentration in Natural Resource Recreation Management, is accredited by the Council on Accreditation of Parks, Recreation, Tourism and Related Professions (COAPRT).

This interdisciplinary minor is open to students in all majors. It is valuable to students preparing for careers in elementary and secondary education, scouting, adventure programming, youth and community groups, nature centers, state and national parks and organized outdoor camping programs.
The minor is organized around a core group of courses and allows students to select one of the following specialized “tracks”: environmental education and interpretation, outdoor pursuits or organized camping.

This major in the Biological Sciences Department provides a focused exposure to environmentally related areas of biology; This program in the Chemistry Department is designed to familiarize the student with the interdisciplinary nature of environmental problems. In addition to the College’s General Education requirement for the bachelor of science or bachelor of arts, the following courses are required; This major in the Geology Department with a concentration in environmental science provides a broad-based program designed to meet the professional and graduate school demands of environmental geoscientists; This concentration in the Physics Department provides depth and a diversity of study in the sciences for students with a special interest in the environment. Cortland’s resources for teaching and research in this area are extensive. Special facilities at Hoxie Gorge, the Outdoor Education Center and Brauer Education Center play a role in the program.
