A brief description of the programs sponsored by the institution to support under-represented groups within the student body:
The principal mission of the Educational Opportunity Program (EOP) at SUNY Cortland is to provide access and support to students with strong academic and personal potential, students who would otherwise be excluded from higher education due to circumstances of academic under preparation and economic disadvantage. Once enrolled, the EOP family at SUNY Cortland share in the student’s dedication to success. This is accomplished by being a full member in our community, enjoying the benefit of the full resources available including academic support, counseling, and monetary aid, and affirming that achievement for us transcends maintaining just passing grades. ASAP: The Academic Support and Achievement Program (ASAP) helps students learn how they learn best. The staff provides academic support to students (undergraduate and graduate) of all ability and achievement levels, through tutoring in writing, reading, math, time management and study skills. Students can receive academic support through ASAP in three ways: professional staff and professionally trained tutors deliver one-on-one instruction, small-group instruction, workshops and presentations; certified Peer Tutors offer in-person and online subject-specific sessions; and trained student leaders provide Supplemental Instruction for historically challenging courses. Socially numerous clubs fraternities, sororities and other organizations exist to support under-represented student groups, e.g., La Familia Latina, The Voice, POWER, Women of color, French Circle, AIDS and HIV Awareness, etc. (See www2.cortland.edu.student-life/clubs-and-organizations/index.dot)

Human Resources conducts new faculty/staff orientation each semester, including Diversity Workshops. Faculty mentors are assigned to new faculty. A Summer Diversity Institute and a Summer Ethics Institute are offered annually. The Faculty Development Center supports professional development for faculty.
