Yes
The charter or mission statement of the committee(s) or a brief description of each committee's purview and activities:
SUNY Brockport has a long-standing commitment to be a positive and innovative force for the protection and enhancement of the local, regional, and global environment through teaching, research, and day-to-day operations. It created a Sustainability Committee to spearhead all the efforts that support this commitment. Activities of the Sustainability Committee are critical to the success of the current strategic plan of the University, “Building a Better Brockport: The University’s Strategic Plan, 2022-27.” Specifically, the Committee work is directly connected to Goal 3: To be a Sustainable and Thriving University for the 21st Century.
Environmental sustainability requires a focus on the environmental health and safety of our campus, as well as quality of place and accessibility. It means focusing on environmentally responsive facilities planning and design, environmental literacy and education, sustainable procurement, and a minimization of waste. Part of our sustainability goal is to ensure that we are not only environmentally conscious, but also proactive in pursuing environmentally sustainable strategies (BBB Goal 3 Objectives).
Sustainability Committee Charge
Guided by the University’s Environmental Sustainability Policy, the Committee is charged with:
1. achieving and then maintaining a higher Sustainability Tracking, Assessment and Rating System (STARS) rating;
2. developing, prioritizing, assessing, and reporting on an annual set of Committee goals and planned actions to further promote and advance an institutional culture of sustainability;
3. evaluating sustainability initiatives and projects, based on a benefit vs. life-cycle cost analysis;
4. publicizing and communicating current University sustainability initiatives to the campus community;
5. conducting and promoting campus events, workshops, showcases, and exhibits focused on enhancing sustainability efforts and practices to more fully engage students, faculty, and staff;
6. promoting and encouraging sustainability, where appropriate, as a key element of the curriculum; and
7. overall, reducing SUNY Brockport’s impact on the environment in the areas of energy, water, waste, buildings, transportation, purchasing, grounds, food, and dining.
