Student sustainability research incentives

Does the institution have an ongoing program to encourage students in multiple disciplines or academic programs to conduct sustainability research?:
Yes

A brief description of the student sustainability research program:
The Summer Undergraduate Research Program (SURP) is an opportunity for students to fully engage in a hands-on educational experience of scholarship, research, and creative activity with a faculty mentor.
Through the generosity of the Brockport Foundation, the University sponsors student work with faculty on the mentor’s research for up to eight weeks during the summer. (As part of the program, on-campus housing and a stipend for full or part time effort for up to eight weeks is available.).
SURP offers paid internships for students to work on various research topics with faculty during the summer, including sustainability-related research. Students in the Environmental Science and Ecology and Earth Science curriculums are encouraged in several ways to conduct research and scholarly activities in sustainability research.

Environmental Science students have conducted research dealing with water quality monitoring, invasive species management, and habitat restoration at various locations throughout the state. It's also important to note that our graduate program is thesis based, and so we usually have ~20 active graduate students conducting ecological research. Last year (2023), 10 Environmental Science and Ecology students were funded through SURP or other Brockport Foundation programs.

Library support

Does the institution have ongoing library support for sustainability research and learning?:
Yes

A brief description of the institution’s library support for sustainability research:
Yes, sustainability research and learning are aligned with Drake Library's mission to support discovery and creation of knowledge, art, and scholarship as well as the campuswide strategic goal ‘to be a sustainable and thriving institution for the 21st century’. Dedicated librarians support student and faculty research via instruction, consultation, and collaborative initiatives both in person and online.

A brief description of the institution's library support for sustainability research:
Supporting over 50 academic programs, many of which touch on sustainability themes, the library’s collection contains a wealth of resources related to environmental concerns and issues, ecology, education, policy and other aspects of sustainability. As one example, the library's physical and online collection has been historically strong in Great Lakes research. Our online repository (SUNY SOAR) has an emphasis on Great Lakes related research reports, theses, articles authored by our students and faculty.
More specifically, Drake Library supports research efforts focused on sustainability and related topics through:
•curated collection development and management policies to balance availability and access,
•careful materials procurement including consortia purchasing and resource sharing,
•recognition and support for the multidisciplinary nature of sustainability research. Library appointment and promotion APT document revisions are expected to explicitly include a statement reflecting positive support for multidisciplinary efforts this spring.
•promotion of sustainability-themed events, programming, and displays to raise awareness and inspire action including:
•Great Lakes Plastics Monster exhibit,
•"Forever Plastics" infographics,
•Global Water Exhibit,
•Recycled PC “Hunter on the Web” display,
•Student research poster sessions,
•Earth Hour participation,
•recycled benches and tree ring exhibit in Drake Library
•an active interlibrary loan program to avoid unnecessary duplication of materials,
•an online thesis collection for masters level, honors and capstone research on sustainability and other subjects as part of the college repository. The library no longer requires bound paper copies of theses.
•the library's OER program and textbook-on-reserve program encourages use of open educational resources to help with textbook affordability and decrease reliance on printed textbooks.
Constrained resources and the need for thoughtful stewardship emphasize a strong reuse and recycle ethos throughout library practice and policy as evidenced by:
•Use of Better World Books for book recycling as part of regular deaccessioning. Over 14,000 books recycled/reused from 2019-23. See Environmental Metrics in Additional Documentation. Other sustainability practices include packaging reuse and newspaper and office paper recycling. •Library facility improvements including sustainability features such as low VOC replacement carpeting, upgraded LED lighting for stained glass windows and individual study rooms, refillable water stations, etc.

Research guides and databases provide additional information offering students a starting point and clear path to access.
•For example, a library research guide for Environmental Science & Biology resources includes recycling, energy, etc. See: https://library.brockport.edu/envsci
•Another example is the Water Resources of the Great Lakes and NYS technical reports collection. ‘The purpose of this collection is to serve as a central location for compilation of research, results and data that have been completed on the NorthCoast, much of which is gray literature”.
Specific online library databases that may be relevant for sustainability research include:
•Green File offers well-researched information covering all aspects of human impact to the environment. Its collection of scholarly, government and general-interest titles includes content on global warming, green building, pollution, sustainable agriculture, renewable energy, recycling, and more. The database provides indexing and abstracts for more than 1,000,000 records, as well as Open Access full text for more than 15,000 records. •Environment Complete contains more than 2.4 million records from more than 2,200 domestic and international titles going back to 1888 (including over 1,350 active core titles) as well as more than 190 monographs. The database also contains full text for more than 920 journals.•BioOne provides more than 200 full-text subscription and open-access titles in the biological, ecological, and environmental sciences.
•Additional documentation to support the submission
•ScienceDirect includes full text access to over 300 peer-reviewed journals
covering scientific, medical, and technical information. Includes arts & humanities, and social sciences.
Does the institution offer repository hosting that makes versions of journal articles, book chapters, and other peer-reviewed scholarly works by its employees freely available on the public internet?
Yes, through SUNY SOAR and SUNY SDR.

https:/ /library.brockport.edu/ir
A brief description of the open access repository
•SUNY Open Access Repository (SOAR)
SOAR is a centrally managed online digital repository that stores, indexes, and makes available scholarly and creative works of SUNY faculty, students, and staff across SUNY campuses.
•SUNY Digital Repository (SDR)
SDR on the DSpace platform, is a centrally managed repository that includes collections from approximately 40 campuses and SUNY System Administration. It differs from the SUNY Open Access Repository (SOAR)in that its content covers a broad range of topics with a strong focus on local campus archival and special collections. This repository is also used to house Open Educational Resources (OER).
