A brief description of how the literacy assessment was developed and/or when it was adopted:
The ASK Survey was based on a published form of the survey by Zwickle & Jones (2018) Zwickle, A., & Jones, K. (2018). Sustainability Knowledge and Attitudes--Assessing Latent Constructors. In Leal Filho, W., Marans, R., Callewaert, J. (Eds.) Handbook of Sustainability and Social Science Research. World Sustainability Series. Springer, Cham. https://doi.org/10.1007/9783-3-319-67122-2_25 It was adopted in fall 2020.
A brief description of how a representative sample was reached (if applicable) and how the assessment(s) were administered :
Data was collected between 9.25.2020 to 11.27.2023. Questions were entered in a Qualtrics survey. IRB approval of the research was obtained. Campus community requests to complete the survey were made by posting it in course materials, announcement in the DailyEagle, an university newsletter, announcement at Scholars Day presentation, and on wall monitors and flyers posted around campus. To increase response rate and thereby representativeness of the sample two gift cards of $25 each were offered to participants in the fall, 2023 term. https://today.brockport.edu/live/news/4419-what-do-you-know-about-environmental?_gl=1*1g901uq*_ga*MTI2NTY2MTc5OC4xNjk3NzM1MzQx*_ga_TTE0R3BNCT*MTcwNTI2MTQ4OS4xNzAuMS4xNzA1MjYxNTIyLjAuMC4w#_gl=1*1ffiuj3*_gcl_au*Mzc5NDk3MjU1LjE2OTc3MzUzNDE.&_ga=2.144174320.416414482.1704892909-1265661798.1697735341
A brief summary of results from the literacy assessment(s):
Faculty (n=59), staff (n=85), graduate students (n=25), and undergraduate students (n=122) comprised the sample. There were variable percent correct multiple choice answers ranging from 41% (undergrad) to 88% (faculty) given across the groups when asked what is the most common cause of pollution of streams and rivers. Most participants correctly answered questions about the purpose of the ozone layer (89%), example of sustainable forest management (83%), definition of sustainable development (87.6%), differences in wealth (95.9%), the country that is the largest emitter of greenhouse gasses (92.9%), and example of environmental justice (85.8%). The questions that participants answered mostly incorrectly included causes of depletion of fish stocks (33.9%), listing largest impact of activities (61.7%), and most common cause of pollution of streams and rivers (58.7%). The undergraduates scored lowest overall (67.98%) compared to that of staff (72.08%), faculty (80.5%), and graduates (73.85%) as well as on 8/12 (67%) items.
