Research Inventory
Inventory of the institution’s sustainability research:
Please see attached documentation, which includes information from various Stanford department resources from 2019-2021.
A brief description of the methodology the institution followed to complete the research inventory:
All tenure line faculty at Stanford conduct research. While the list of tenure line faculty reported in past STARS report submissions was based on piece-meal datasets from various campus departments, this data is now more comprehensive and accurate by being captured from Stanford's Institutional Research & Decision Support team.
Sustainability researchers were evaluated on the implications of their research on future social, environmental, and economic well-being in society.
Only tenure-track faculty and their associated departments were counted in the total denominator metrics. These faculty members have titles of either assistant/associate professor or professor. Emeritus professors were not included in the counts.

Data source(s) and notes about the submission:
The number of departments reported in the Academics and Demographics (PRE-5) and this Academic Courses (AC-9) credit may differ for two reasons.
First, the PRE-5 number of departments is based on the list of departments included in the AC-9 dataset. Stanford's institutional data team does not track faculty associated with departments with the same nuance that is done for the list of academic course departments. To reduce the potentially inaccurate manipulation of cross-referencing these departments, we have opted to use the department descriptions from the faculty list received as-is. The recent faculty list received included 83 departments.
Second, since Stanford is only counting tenure-line faculty in the metrics for this Research & Scholarship credit, we have removed the six departments from our reported metric that have zero tenure-line faculty to ensure consistency in the numerators and denominators of our reporting. Therefore the final metric we have reported for this credit is 77 departments (83-6=77).
