A brief description of when and why the workplace health and safety baseline was adopted (e.g. in sustainability plans and policies or in the context of other reporting obligations):
Stanford opened the Occupational Health Center (OHC) in 2009, which works to provide outstanding clinical care to improve the health and safety of university employees, so the baseline was intentionally set prior to the opening of the OHC. A three-year average was used for the baseline since the numbers for any one year in this particular area can be unpredictable.

The Stanford University Occupational Health Center (SUOHC) was established in 2007 to care for the occupational health needs of Stanford University faculty and staff, and is dedicated to providing outstanding clinical care to improve the health and safety of university employees. SUOHC is a campus-based medical clinic that offers evaluation and treatment for work-related injuries and illnesses, work-related preventive medical services, and OSHA and departmentally-mandated medical surveillance programs for university staff.
SUOHC is committed to compliance with all applicable federal and state laws and standards governing occupational health and safety of employees, and works collaboratively with Industrial Hygiene, Biosafety and Radiation Safety Officers, as well as Risk Management to ensure that these standards are met.
Safety Managers in various departments across campus also work with employees in their departments to monitor and advise on safety and wellbeing. Safety Managers also act as liaisons with Stanford’s BeWell Wellness program. For instance, all technicians are encouraged to attend the annual BeWell Wellness Fair and are allotted time by their shops to attend the fair.
