A brief description of the methodology the institution followed to complete the research inventory (including the types of faculty and staff included as researchers):
All tenure line faculty at Stanford conduct research. Sustainability researchers were evaluated on the implications of their research on future social, environmental, and economic well-being in society. Information was ascertained on faculty research through databases maintained by the Woods Institute for the Environment, the Precourt Institute for Energy, and the School of Earth, Energy, and Environmental Sciences. Only tenure-track faculty currently doing research pertinent to sustainability outcomes were counted toward the total faculty performing sustainability research on campus. These faculty members have titles of either assistant/associate professor or professor. Research from all other schools was also included by identifying departments that might include sustainability research and perusing the descriptions of each faculty member's research within that department to detect stated sustainability outcomes. In terms of departments involved in sustainability research, a department was included in the total if: i) One or more of the confirmed sustainability researchers is directly listed under that department; and/or ii) One or more of the confirmed sustainability researchers is listed on the department website as a courtesy faculty member or affiliate of that department.
