St. Lawrence's Purchasing Department uses the following sustainable procurement practices: Sustainability Evaluation - Vendors who respond to requests for proposals (RFPs) are asked how they incorporate sustainability into their operations and how they will support SLU's sustainability goals Recycled Content - The standard copier/printer paper used on campus is 50% post-consumer recycled content, our toilet paper and paper towels are 100% post-consumer recycled content Reduced Packaging - Many orders received by the warehouse are bulk orders and packaged minimally, for example the SPLOX copier paper is delivered in 2,500 sheet box rather than in reams Environmentally Friendly Packaging - Office supply boxes are taken back by the vendor to be reused for other orders, the Dining Center uses compostable bags Less Toxic Chemicals - Whenever possible we evaluate the feasibility of less toxic product substitutions Small Business & MWBE Program - Purchasing as mechanism to further economic and social development http://www.stlawu.edu/green-pages/purchasing

A brief description of the published sustainability criteria for chemically intensive products and services:
The University Office of Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) maintains published policies related to the chemically intensive products and services (http://www.stlawu.edu/environmental-health-and-safety/environmental-health-and-safety-policies) . Specifically, the St. Lawrence University Waste Management and Minimization Plan provides staff and faculty with measures to take to evaluate chemically intensive products (i.e. "Substitute Non-Hazardous of Less Hazardous Materials for Hazardous Ones"). Additionally, the EHS office also has a published policy for Integrated Pest Management (http://www.stlawu.edu/sites/default/files/resource/ipm%20%28december%202006%29-1_0.pdf) . This policy states " [our goal] is a concentrated effort to reduce and minimize the use of toxic/hazardous chemical herbicides/pesticides (H/P) to a level considered to be absolutely minimal to insure proper maintenance of lawns, shrubs and trees."
