The green building guidelines or policies:
St. Lawrence University is committed to the concept of sustainability and environmental stewardship in the design and construction of new structures.The University will work with the architect, engineer and general contractor to take a collaborative and deliberate approach toward sustainable building design and construction.The University is also actively pursuing energy
conservation and sustainability measures. The integrative nature of building systems is considered for all aspects of the design and the process has been guided by the fact that sound business practices demand efficient use of the College’s financial resources. It is the University's intent to have new buildings designed and constructed to ASHRAE 189.1 guidelines. Titled, "Standard for the Design of High Performance, Green Buildings," and nicknamed "The Green Standard," ASHRAE has set out a path similar to that of LEED in the way it is met.
The goals of St. Lawrence’s Green Building Guidelines are as follows:
• To reinforce St. Lawrence University’s commitment to campus environmental excellence.
• To conduct the University’s design and construction process to prioritize energy and sustainability with a commitment to green building principles.
• To foster an integrative green design process that emphasizes a sensible commitment to green design and not simply an accumulation of LEED points.
• To enable the building to function as a first rate space while instructing and inspiring occupants in the principles of environmental sustainability.
• To create an awareness in the campus constituents regarding energy and resource efficiency in the University’s buildings.
• To respond to growing public awareness of environmental issues and human health concerns linked to buildings.
• To recognize that buildings are responsible for a significant portion of the nation’s energy use and environmental footprint.
• To embrace technological advances and the evolution of smart design practices that demonstrate energy conservation and sustainable design practices.

Titled, "Standard for the Design of High Performance, Green Buildings," and nicknamed "The Green Standard," ASHRAE has set out a path similar to that of LEED in the way it is met. The Standard is, in many ways, even more restrictive than LEED in its requirements and recommendations.

Commissioning activities transform many building systems into an integrated whole. During all tests and performance protocols, a dedicated commissioning authority oversees the building team to ensure that the systems have been well-designed, appropriately installed and functionally tested, and that the staff is trained to operate and maintain the facility in conformance with design intent.
