Each year the University hosts the North Country Symposium which has the mission "to convene stakeholders in northern New York to explore and ultimately enhance the region's economic, environmental, and educational vitality." Local and state elected officials attend each year and stakeholders decide on actions to be taken including those surrounding issues of sustainability. In the most recent symposium (2013), "Education and the North Country's Future: Our Challenges and Opportunities" sustainability was included through discussions of energy reduction and efficiency as as way to reduce the facilities' costs at schools as one way to help in times of budget stress.
