Yes

A brief description of other programs or initiatives to encourage more sustainable modes of transportation and/or reduce the impact of student and employee commuting:

St. Lawrence College offers a number of initiatives to encourage more sustainable transportation:

  • Students: A portion of the student union dues includes a mandatory student transit pass (heavily discounted from regular transit rates) that is valid year-round until a student graduates.

  • Staff: Kingston Transit offers the transpass program for local organizations and businesses to reduce single-occupancy drivers and get transit users signed up. This is offered through a bulk cost reduction. SLC's staff participate in this bulk discount which saves registered employees $20 per month.

  • Campus communities: St. Lawrence College participates in the annual Commuter Challenge and the Campus Commuter Challenge where we typically place in the top 10 in both our city and among Canadian colleges. The Sustainability team works in advance of both challenges to promote the event to the campus communities and to encourage as many registrants as possible. Through the challenge participants pledge to reduce their single-driving commuting and replace it with more sustainable options. Mileage is tracked and those with the greatest reductions are recognized by the college.

  • Cycling: Bike racks are available at each campus (as are shower facilities) and the Kingston site has a secured bike storage unit.
