Name or title of the innovative policy, practice, program, or outcome:
A brief description of the innovative policy, practice, program, or outcome that outlines how credit criteria are met and any positive measurable outcomes associated with the innovation:
A split, bungalow-style residential home was built on campus. One side is built to conventional standards and the built to higher energy efficiency standards. The higher efficiency side is being outfitted with a number of renewable energy technologies that students can be educated on and participate in their monitoring, installation, and maintenance. The aim is to create a net-zero building whose data can be compared to conventional building standards; this will both help inform how homes should be designed in the future for local building industry, but also helps inform how existing curriculum at the college can and should be updated so that the curriculum is relevant and helping to push sustainable home innovation. Students are currently being recruited to help install the equipment and technology going into Passive House. Technologies including (but not limited to): external siding that is actually solar PV panels, a small-scale horizontal wind turbine, an energy storage system and control panel for managing DC and AC power loads, and a hydronic biomass pellet stove for in-floor heating. Students will also be responsible for setting up sensors and data acquistion systems to monitor the efficiency and performance of all of the technologies included as part of the Passive House design.
