A brief description of how the literacy assessment was developed and/or when it was adopted:

The questions in the sustainability literacy assessment were drafted by the office of sustainability and St. Lawrence College's Institutional Research & Data Governance team. Questions have been selected to measure community's perceived importance of a variety of sustainability issues, to test the participants' knowledge or level of awareness of SLC's sustainability initiatives, and to gather data on the community's commuting practices. Most significantly, the survey aims to gather feedback from the SLC community regarding what sustainability issues really matter to them, what issues should inform the college's sustainability initiatives, and what tools the community needs to act more sustainably.

A brief description of how a representative sample was reached (if applicable) and how the assessment(s) were administered :

The survey was issued March 28 to April 12, 2024 and 2023 to the SLC community via email and the survey was hosted on Microsoft Forms for delivery. The survey was promoted through the college's Communications team, the weekly newsletter (issued to all college staff and faculty), the Sustainability Implementation Advisory Committee, and the sustainability team's social media channels.  The survey was intended to be administered to the entire campus body but we only received 737 responses in total from 2023-2024.

A brief summary of results from the literacy assessment(s):

  • Of the total number of responses, 57% were students and 43% were staff of faculty members.

  • Food insecurity, poverty and displacement, and extreme weather events were categorized as the three highest issues of global concern.

  • Over 90% of respondents correctly identified the waste stream when presented with mixed materials.

  • Respondents reported on which issues should be prioritized when planning sustainability integration at the College.

  • Waste reduction was identified as the highest area of opportunity for St. Lawrence College to prioritize.

  • Awareness of the College's sustainability initiatives was assessed, our electronic waste, sustainable transportation, and reusable container program were ranked as the most well-known/recognizable initiatives.

  • Respondents were asked to assess the relevance of promoting gender equality in the lens of a sustainable development to determine how they viewed social-sustainability issues. 83% of respondents ranked this as an important part of sustainable development.
