Name or title of the innovative policy, practice, program, or outcome:
Sustainable Living Centre
A brief description of the innovative policy, practice, program, or outcome that outlines how credit criteria are met and any positive measurable outcomes associated with the innovation:
The old gymnasium on campus is currently undergoing renovations to become a new education, research, and innovation facility called the Sustainable Living Centre. It will be an open-concept collaborative space where students will learn about and participate in the construction and design of sustainable, affordable, net-zero homes. Traditionally, building construction involves a number of different skilled trades working cooperatively on the same project, but rarely are they coordinated towards a common goal of minimizing the environmental footprint of the building they construct. This new space will be managed in such a way as to fully integrate different skilled trades in a collaborative way towards achieving sustainable design goals. Life cycle assessment as well as other impact tools will be used as a novel framework to help guide these common goals while simultaneously integrating education and research needs into the space.
The gym is currently in phase 1 of construction where the infrastructure for the design space is being executed, including large bay doors for product delivery and shipping. The first sustainabiliy project will be initiated this summer out of the Sustainable Living Centre where we will be working with a sustainable farm project north of Kingston that is looking to create net-zero sleeping cabins for patrons and employees.
