In July 2007 St. John's University is part of the New York City "College Challenge" initiative where we are reducing our carbon emmissions 30% by 2017.

In Decmeber 2008 St.John's University became the first private university to sign a Memorandum of Understanding with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. "St. John’s efforts for continuous improvement involve: using EPA’s environmental stewardship programs to develop policies, practices, and specifications for environmentally efficient standards; increasing stewardship awareness; staying current with EPA regulations and guidelines; increasing involvement and recognition of St. John’s stakeholders; partnering with local government; and addressing environmental concerns swiftly."
