APEX COMMITTEE
At SSN College of Engineering, the institution's commitment to sustainability is driven by two key committees: the Apex Committee for Sustainability and the Sustainability Action Committee (SAC). These committees are composed of various sustainability officers, each with a specific role in guiding the college's sustainability initiatives.
Key Activities and Substantive Accomplishments:
Ban on Single-Use Plastics:
In a decisive step toward reducing plastic waste, SSN banned the use of single-use plastics across its campus, including items like plastic water bottles. This policy shift has not only minimized plastic consumption but has also raised awareness about the environmental impact of plastic pollution. The initiative was coupled with campus-wide campaigns promoting the use of sustainable, reusable alternatives among students, staff, and faculty.
Formation of the Green Campus Committee:
The Green Campus Committee was established with the goal of enhancing the campus’s green infrastructure and combating carbon emissions. The committee spearheaded multiple tree-planting drives, aiming to increase the green cover on campus. This initiative is part of a broader strategy to mitigate the institution’s carbon footprint while also creating a healthier, more environmentally friendly campus environment
Solar Panels for Renewable Energy:
One of the most significant infrastructural accomplishments has been the installation of solar panels on campus. This has allowed SSN to harness solar energy and significantly reduce its reliance on conventional, non-renewable energy sources. The solar panels contribute to both energy savings and the institution’s carbon footprint reduction goals, reflecting SSN’s commitment to sustainable energy practices.
Seed Funding for Sustainability Research:
To foster innovation and research in sustainability, the college’s management has provided seed funding for various sustainability-related research projects. These funds have encouraged faculty and students to explore solutions to critical environmental challenges, such as renewable energy technologies, waste management, and climate resilience. The financial backing has resulted in several impactful research projects that align with the institution's sustainability goals.
Project Mapping to Sustainability:
A key institutional effort has been the mapping of all projects to sustainability principles, ensuring that both academic and operational activities contribute to the college’s broader sustainability agenda. This has not only integrated sustainability into the fabric of the institution’s project planning but has also encouraged interdisciplinary collaboration and innovation on sustainability-focused initiatives.
Promoting the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs):
As part of a long-term commitment to sustainability education, SSN has worked to raise awareness about the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) among its campus community. The 17 SDGs have been prominently displayed on boards across the campus, acting as a continuous reminder of the global sustainability agenda. This initiative has encouraged students and
These accomplishments highlight SSN College of Engineering's continued dedication to fostering a sustainable future, both on campus and beyond. Through focused leadership, strategic planning, and community engagement, SSN has made significant progress in addressing environmental challenges while instilling a sustainability mindset in the next generation of leaders.
