A brief description of the methodology used to determine the total number of courses offered and to identify sustainability course offerings, including the definitions used and the process for reviewing and/or validating the course inventory :
Southern New Hampshire University courses from Fall 2016 –Present were reviewed to determine which could be classified as "sustainability courses" or "courses that include sustainability." The listing includes undergraduate and graduate courses taught by University College and the College for Online and Continuing Education, the online branch of SNHU. Information reviewed for each class includes the course department, number, title, description, and learning outcomes. The AASHE STARS Technical Manual was used as the standard to determine classification for each course. The classification methodology included first reviewing department and course titles and then conducting a keyword search on the course descriptions and learning outcomes. Keywords searched include “sustainability”, “environment”, “ecology”, “social”, “triple bottom line” and others. Courses were noted as “Sustainability Courses” or “Courses that include Sustainability” based on the amount that the course covered sustainability when compared to other topics. As this is the first STARS report for SNHU, several data collection improvements were noted and will be passed along to the registrar for consideration as the University adopts a new information system in the next year.
How were courses with multiple offerings or sections counted for the figures reported above?:
Each course was counted as a single course regardless of the number of offerings or sections
