The SIU Carbondale main campus comprises 90% of the building area included within the reported institutional boundary, 54% of the buildings, and 13% of the land area. Also included are: research farms in Carbondale, Belleville, and Dowell; transportation education facilities at the Southern Illinois Airport in Murphysboro; environmental education facilities near Makanda; WSIU TV and radio broadcast stations; and other satellite facilities. The SIU School of Medicine facilities in Springfield are independently managed and are therefore not included in the reported institutional boundary.

A combination of University-owned and leased structures and affiliated community hospitals provides the base for SIU School of Medicine programs. The main facilities for delivering the medical school curriculum are in Carbondale and Springfield. Facilities in Carbondale are home to the first year of the M.D. program and basic science research laboratories. Springfield facilities provide for the remaining three years of medical school as well as residency programs and additional basic research laboratories.
