Southern Illinois University Carbondale pays all employees a minimum wage of $8.25/hour which is significantly higher than the federal minimum wage. This applies to our student employees as well. In addition, the University adheres to the Prevailing Wage Act which ensures that craft and trade positions (temporary or permanent) are paid the trade’s prevailing wage. We also fall under the jurisdiction of the State Universities Civil Service System which conducts salary surveys biannually to ensure we are keeping pace with other universities in the state. According to the MIT Living Wage Calculator, the living wage calculation for Carbondale-Marion, IL is $9.83, and 97.97% of all full- and part-time employees at the institution earn above that standard. This excludes our undergraduate student employees but includes faculty and staff (faculty, civil service, administrative professional, extra help and graduate assistantships).

A brief description of the compensation (wages and benefits) provided to the institution’s lowest paid regular, full-time employees:
Southern Illinois University Carbondale pays all employees a minimum wage of $8.25/hour which is significantly higher than the federal minimum wage. This applies to our student employees as well. In addition, the University adheres to the Prevailing Wage Act which ensures that craft and trade positions (temporary or permanent) are paid the trade’s prevailing wage. We also fall under the jurisdiction of the State Universities Civil Service System which conducts salary surveys biannually to ensure we are keeping pace with other universities in the state. Most Faculty, Administrative/Professional and Civil Service staff are eligible for health benefits. These are administered by Central Management Service of the State of Illinois.
