A brief description of the mechanisms through which students have an avenue to participate in one or more governance bodies:
1)The Undergraduate Student Government (USG) represents the undergraduate student body at Southern Illinois University Carbondale in all matters pertaining to student welfare, student activities and student life.The undergraduate student government is a recognized constituent body of the SIU Board of Trustees. USG in its representative capacity will communicate to the student body: the aims, policies and the mission of the university upper administration. http://usg.rso.siu.edu/
2)The Graduate and Professional Student Council (GPSC) solicits opinions from its constituency, discusses, and takes positions on such issues as graduate assistantships, fee increases, grievance procedures, campus safety and other matters of relevance to graduate students. The GPSC President and Executive Board communicate constituency concerns to the campus administration and the Board of Trustees. SIU Carbondale will conduct a campus-wide election to identify a student trustee, to be
administered by the Student Trustee Election Board. A secure, web-based program will be utilized to ensure all students, undergraduate, graduate, and professional, have the opportunity to vote. The successful candidate will be the candidate who receives the most votes during the election.

A brief description of the formal student role in regard to each area indicated, including examples from the previous three years:
The Undergraduate Student Government (USG) represents the undergraduate student body at Southern Illinois University Carbondale in all matters pertaining to student welfare, student activities and student life.
USG also voices the concerns of students in the planning and administration of the university at large. The government is divided into three separate branches to better administer the student body – Legislative, Judicial, Executive.
The undergraduate student government is a recognized constituent body of the SIU Board of Trustees. USG in its representative capacity will communicate to the student body: the aims, policies and the mission of the university upper administration.
USG partners with RSO’s to support student outreach efforts. Our hope is to help students connect with the specific RSO that best represents their interests. When a student gets involved it has a far reaching positive impact, both forwarding the goals of the RSO while enhancing the overall student experience at SIUC.
In addition, students are actively engaged in the Chancellor's Budget and Planning Committee, Constituency heads meetings, strategic planning and the University Diversity Council.

A brief description of the mechanisms through which all staff have an avenue to participate in one or more governance bodies:
The Administrative and Professional (A/P) Staff Council represents the administrative and professional staff constituency. The Council, as the official body representing the A/P staff, communicates and supports the views of the constituency on all matters of university governance to the chancellor, president, and Board of Trustees of Southern Illinois University.
The Civil Service Council represents civil service employees of Southern Illinois University Carbondale. The Council, as a recognized constituency, functions within the overall governance structure of the University and advises and consults with the Chancellor on a regular basis.
Is there at least one non-supervisory staff representative on the institution’s governing body who was elected by peers or appointed by a representative staff body or organization?:

Each term, campus A/P and Civil Service employees receive a flyer in campus-mail and via email announcing vacancies on the both councils. Being on the either Council is a great way to meet other staff and to learn about the many campus issues that affect employees. Interested staff are required to fill a form and return it to the SIU Constituency Office

The A/P staff council includes representatives from each of 8 sectors representing the sectors of the university. The A/P Staff Council Standing Committees for 2016-2017 are: Committee on Committees, Constituency Relations, Operating Paper, Staff Benefits, Staff Welfare, and Executive.

The Civil Service Council membership is composed of employees elected from the civil service staff on the Carbondale Campus.

A brief description of the mechanisms through which all faculty (including adjunct faculty) have an avenue to participate in one or more governance bodies:
The Faculty Senate is the body empowered to act as agent for the University faculty, with delegated power to formulate broad policies in regard to the educational functions of the University. The Senate plays an important role in the governance structure of the University and is committed to shared governance not only as a concept but as a fundamental precept.
The Faculty Senate is charged to initiate, promote, and ensure the enforcement of policies involving academic and intellectual freedom and concerns itself in all matters of faculty status and welfare. There are 36 Senators, 6 of whom represent the non-tenure track faculty.
Is there at least one teaching or research faculty representative on the institution’s governing body who was elected by peers or appointed by a representative faculty body or organization?:
A brief description of faculty representation on the governing body, including how the representatives are selected:
Each voting unit shall nominate and elect by a secret ballot the appropriate number of representatives from among its eligible voters. Nominees for non-tenure track seats will be accepted only from colleges or equivalent units which have fewer than two non-tenure track senators whose terms continue beyond the current academic year.
The Elections Committee shall prepare for each voting unit a list of the eligible voters of that unit and distribute copies to each of the voters. The lists will be arranged by department and will state the name and rank of each voter.
On the nomination ballot each voter may nominate persons numbering no more than the number of representatives to be elected. The nominees to be placed on the election ballot shall be those receiving the largest number of votes in the nomination ballot who have indicated willingness to serve. The Elections Committee shall be responsible for contacting nominees before preparing the election ballot.
The number of nominees to be placed on the election ballot shall be twice the number of representatives to be elected except in the case of a tie, which will be resolved by the Elections Committee by extending the number, if necessary.
In the election ballot each voter will select persons numbering no more than the number of representatives to be elected. A tie will be resolved by conducting a special run-off election as soon as possible.
The Faculty Senate shall make rules prescribing the nature of the information to be released relative to the results of each ballot.
The Elections Committee may collect nomination and election ballots by mail or by electronic means. The Faculty Senate shall by a two-thirds vote adopt special rules of order prescribing the method by which ballots shall be cocllected
