A brief description of how the institution engages in public policy advocacy for sustainability, including the issues, legislation, and ordinances for or against which the institution has advocated:
SIU and City of Carbondale have cooperated to address the high desire and demand for bicycle usage in the City and Carbondale by creating the Carbondale Bicycle Master Plan. Several students and staff were part of the advisory committee. The purpose of the Carbondale Bicycle Master Plan was to create a master plan for citywide bicycle improvements with short, intermediate, and long term implementation strategies. The Bicycle Master Plan builds upon the positive momentum of improving bicycling in Carbondale as means of sustainable transport.
