We have been promoting recycling at all home football games in 2015 and 2016. Campaign components have included:
-student volunteers visiting tailgaters to provide bags for recycling and educational information
-tracking of diversion rates and celebrating/announcing results over the loudspeaker at the ballgame
-recycling promotion over the loudspeaker at the game
-close collaboration and communication with operations teams to make the process more effective
-photo shoot with the university mascot promoting recycling and use of photos for marketing, including yard signs placed around stadium and tailgating areas
-communication with all Saluki Row Tailgating vendors prior to games and application of signage at tents describing what is recyclable by location

In 2015, we diverted 2780 pounds of recyclables from the landfill.
In 2016, we have greatly increased our diversion rates, having diverted 4220 pounds of recyclables from the landfill with one game remaining in the season.

Dawgs' Nite Out is a periodic event hosted on campus as an alternative night activity. It is hosted 4 nights a year. The Sustainability Office has been using this event to promote education around Zero Waste. This includes event planning and outreach at the event itself, including a waste audit at the end of the night.
A brief description of the measured positive impact(s) of the campaign (2nd campaign):
The following are the results measured from the Zero Waste Choices Event during Dawgs Nite Out
o Total waste generated (recyclables, food waste, and landfill waste): ~150lbs
o 75 lbs of waste are diverted from landfill
o Without this initiative (and the superb participation by the DNO team and volunteers), we estimate that only 10% of the waste would have been diverted from the landfill (recycled).
o 15 pounds of pizza waste sent to composting facility

A brief description of other outreach campaigns, including measured positive impacts:
-RecycleMania is a friendly competition tool for college recycling programs to promote waste reduction activities on campus. The 8-week program has been happening since 2007 on the SIU-Carbondale campus. RecycleMania is advertised to the student and campus community. In addition, invitations for participation and announcements regarding the competition are widely circulated. Students and campus groups are encouraged to take part by boosting and promoting their recycling efforts. In 2016, we advertised a "Get Caught Green Handed" social media promotion. Students who took photos of themselves recycling were entered to win an award. Information on the benefits and practices of recycling are also promoted during RecyceMania. Recycling amounts are measured and reported on a weekly basis with recognition given to colleges and areas showing improvement. RecyceMania has had a significant positive impact on the SIU campus. In 2016, our weekly recycling diversion rates improved by an average of 7% over 2015.
-America Recycles Day: To celebrate and engage SIUC students about America Recycles Day, the Sustainability Office held a tabling event November 15, 2016 from 10am-3pm outside of the Student Center to engage with students who were passing by. The event was held in collaboration with Keep Carbondale Beautiful, a non-for-profit organization in Carbondale, IL. As students walked by, volunteers eagerly passed out new recycling stickers and invited students over to learn more about recycling, participate in activities like "What does Sustainability mean to you", test their knowledge via a decomposition timeline, and learn more about the Sustainability Office. Students also got a chance to enter themselves in a raffle to win one of two gift cards! Overall, over 200 students stopped by our table and were impacted by our message.
