A brief description of how the institution engages in public policy advocacy for sustainability, including the issues, bills, and ordinances for or against which the institution has advocated:
SIU Sustainability Council and City of Carbondale are cooperating on construction of a new bike path connecting campus with downtown Carbondale. The bike and walking path will be a highlight of SIU-Carbondale partnership, and, most importantly increase the walk/bike infrastructure of Carbondale, thereby reducing student, faculty, staff and citizens’ reliance on automobiles, and their associated pollution. This grant of funds from the SIUC Sustainability Council provides an important cost sharing opportunity for the City and University. Once completed, this bike and pedestrian path will be an important step in providing safe, affordable, and low carbon emission transportation option; a cornerstone to a sustainable community.
