A brief description of the institution’s programs that help increase the diversity of higher education faculty :
SIU Carbondale participates in the Diversifying Faculty in Illinois (DFI) program which was established by the Illinois General Assembly in 2004. Through a highly competitive application process, the program awards funding to minority graduate students who are working toward an advanced degree (master’s or doctorate) leading to a faculty or staff position at an Illinois institution of higher education. The Illinois Board of Higher Education (IBHE) oversees the application process and awards over 100 fellowships annually. For the 2013-2014 academic year, the IBHE program awarded five new fellowships to SIU Carbondale.
To demonstrate the University’s commitment to diversity, the Affirmative Action Office established the University’s Hiring Procedures to be following by all departments. The procedures require the department chair/hiring unit administrator to submit a “Recruitment Strategies for Promoting Diversity” form with the request to advertise a position. Each request must have at least one diversity source for advertising. Frequently used sources are: the Diversity Affinity Group; Diversity, Inc.com; Diversity Trio; and Illinois Diversity.com.
The Diversity Opportunity Hire Funds were established for the purpose of diversifying faculty at SIU Carbondale. The funds are specifically for the purpose of enticing minority tenure-track faculty to SIU and can be used for salary (summer), start-up packages, or graduate assistants to encourage the best-in-field to our institution.
The Office of the Associate Chancellor for Institutional Diversity oversees the Underrepresented Tenure Track Faculty Program which supports new minority faculty by providing guidance and assistance in navigating the process of securing tenure and earning promotion.
