The primary mission of the Advisory Committee is to establish a Commission on Diversity consisting of campus and community members to serve the SIU Carbondale campus as a whole. The Advisory Committee and the Commission will then work jointly with the Coordinator for Diversity and Equity and the Associate Chancellor for Institutional Diversity to draft a diversity strategic plan for the campus which is in alignment with the SIU Carbondale Strategic Plan.

A brief description of the diversity office:
The Office of Diversity and Equity at SIU Carbondale is dedicated to promoting Inclusive Excellence - a system where everyone has the opportunity to learn and contribute to our highest potential. Our office nurtures and supports diversity among faculty, staff and students by providing training on cultural and professional competency, inclusion, diversity in the classroom, sexual harassment, and dating, drinking/drugs and sex; and consultation regarding possible concerns experienced in the classroom or workplace site. The Office of Diversity and Equity processes complaints of violations of Title IX and Title VII and conducts investigations. This includes complaints of sexual harassment; gender, race, age, disability, veteran status, religious or other discrimination; bias; and retaliation.

A brief description of the diversity coordinator's position:
The person in this position has overall responsibility for the Office of Diversity and Equity. The responsibilities will include planning, development, and implementation of existing or new policies, programs and initiatives such as diversity education and training and diversity recognition. Other duties include coordinating the policy development and implementation of the university's strategic plan for diversity including continuous monitoring of the campus climate; developing a departmental strategic plan and collaborating with university staff to develop and implement diversity compliance policies on campus; facilitating the Diversity Advisory Committee; assisting in the presentation of workshops for employees and students on identifying sexual harassment, discrimination and retaliation in the workplace/ classroom; and assisting in the investigation of sexual harassment and discrimination complaints.
