A brief description of how the assessment was developed:

The sustainability council developed an initial list of categories for the assessment. This list of categories was augmented through a sustainability curriculum inventory conducted in the Fall 2010 semester. In that inventory, faculty members were asked to define sustainability, list criteria essential to sustainability, and identify sustainability components that were underrepresented in the curriculum. Responses to these questions were used to identify new sustainability components which were added to the initial list.

A brief description of how the assessment was administered:

The assessment was administered electronically, in survey format, to all faculty, staff, and students at SIU. Three requests to participate were sent via email one week apart. Included in the request to participate was a link to the survey.
Individual sustainability components were grouped into the following six categories:
• Individual Integerity
• Integrated Systems Management
• Ecological
• Cultural
• Energy Systems
• Food Systems
