1st Campaign
South Waste Audit
A brief description of the campaign, including how students and/or employees were engaged:
Faculty, staff, and students participated in a waste audit in spring 2017. Compostables, recycling, and garbage were taken from a few buildings and faculty, staff, and students sorted the trash, weighed it, and calculated contamination rates. Faculty, staff, and students that participated gained valuable knowledge about the three main waste streams and the Sustainability Committee used that information to communicate contamination to the campus community and develop other initiatives to reduce contamination and improve proper waste sorting.
A brief description of the measured positive impact(s) of the campaign:
It is hard to measure the impacts of the campaign, because we do not currently have accurate weights of our garbage and recycling in order to compare before and after results. However, anecdotally, there is more conversation and we are fielding more questions about proper waste sorting. Faculty and students are asking more questions. They are requesting help in their offices and classrooms.
