Does the institution have an ongoing program that offers incentives for academic staff in multiple disciplines or departments to develop new sustainability courses and/or incorporate sustainability into existing courses? :
A brief description of the incentive program(s):
FY21
The Sustainability Specialist and the Center for the Enhancement of Teaching in Learning offered a month long virtual course on how to integrate sustainability into curriculum. This opportunity provided SDSU faculty an opportunity to learn about sustainability and how to integrate it into their curriculum through the lens of the courses they teach. The virtual event provided a mixture of synchronous and asynchronous sessions. Brian Campbell, executive director for Iowa Environmental Council, provided two virtual, live sessions discussing the thought processes and pedagogies for how to integrate sustainability. Other sessions included testimonials from SDSU faculty who have successfully integrated sustainability into their curriculum; a panel discussion centered around sustainability and current events; an overview of sustainability, techniques, and resources for integrating sustainability into curriculum; virtual tours of SDSU sustainability efforts; and highlights of SDSU sustainability efforts and resources. A follow up discussion was held 4 months later to provide an opportunity for participants to share how their integration was going, what they accomplished, and any struggles/successes.
The Agronomy, Horticulture, and Plant Science Department offered workload time to create the course PRAG 310 Sustainable Agriculture which reaches across disciplines to discuss and teach sustainable practices.
FY22
In October 2021, SDSU Sustainability Institute offered a self-paced online course faculty for the integration of sustainability concepts into their courses. This was the same program that was offered in FY21, minus the follow up discussion. The sessions were all asynchronous.
