Does the institution offer at least one immersive, sustainability-focused educational study program that is one week or more in length?:
Yes
A brief description of the sustainability-focused immersive program(s) offered by the institution, including how each program addresses the social, economic, and environmental dimensions of sustainability:
FY17-FY19
Through SDSU's partnership with Council on International Student Exchange Program (ISEP), International Educational Exchange (CIEE), and International Studies Abroad (ISA) several study abroad programs are available with themes of sustainability.
Engineers Without Borders (EWB) is a nationwide program that encourages partnerships with communities that will last 5 or more years. These partnerships should provide an improved quality of life for the community's residents. SDSU's chapter of EWB works to provide safe drinking water to a rural community in Bolivia. They help build chlorination systems and provide education to the community on the importance of safe water and how to utilize the chlorination system. The group has made several trips to Bolivia to install two chlorination systems and work with the local residents.
The service learning class (EDS 492/592 Educational Leadership in Service) involves 10-11 students a year who work with a community in Belize. The students help the community with their needs. Sometimes these needs pertain to sustainability, such as implementing a composting system. Cultural implications are always considered in the service.
