A brief description of steps the institution has taken to ensure that the purchasing policy, directives, or guidelines are followed :

Departments are required to use the state contracts as their first source. State contracts contain products that support the policy. Also, when a bid is required, SDSU's bid system contains requirements for paper purchases. When placing orders, the SDSU Print Lab checks and/or verifies that they are buying paper products that meet the South Dakota Administrative Rules regarding paper purchasing and adopted 2007 EPA Guidelines (United States Environmental Protection Agency Comprehensive Procurement Guidelines, Buy-Recycled Series, Paper Products, October 2007), which provides guidelines on buying recycled paper. When “bidding out” larger purchases of paper products, Print Lab completes a "Specifications Form Requestor" form and includes specs derived from the customer as well as 2007 EPA Guidelines. The "Specifications Form Requestor" form follows South Dakota Administrative Rules regarding paper purchasing and the 2007 EPA Guidelines.

The costs are estimates as paper purchases are not tracked by percent recycled material. We only know if products were between 10-29% and >30% recycled content. All products that were noted as >30% recycled content were placed in the 30-40% recycled content category.
