Sustainability is an “Overarching Value” and key strategic initiative in 2014-19 Strategic Plan. The 2nd Annual Sustainability Day was organized in the Student Center Ballrooms on October 21, 2015. Noted author and environmental educator David W. Orr was the keynote speaker. 3500 student, faculty, staff and community members attended keynotes, symposiums, panel discussion, film showing, art, nursing and technology exhibits, Farm Fresh Dinner and Sustainability Fair. Vision, Mission and Goals (VMG) for Sustainable SSU are approved, with endorsements from President Armiñana, the Academic Senate and Associated Students Senate. “Do One Thing Today” (DOTT) media /marketing campaign was created and launched by Sustainable SSU in collaboration with the Sustainable Executive Committee. Spring semester of 2015, students formed the Students for Sustainability club. “Sustainability in the Classroom” initiative funded 10 faculty members to write or adapt 8 courses to emphasize sustainability topics, increasing the campus total to 70 courses. Residential Life developed a Sustainability Initiative with goals of addressing student behavior in water and energy use reduction, responsible consumer behavior and resource stewardship. Lastly, two faculty were awarded CSU-funded “Campus as a Living Lab” grants totaling $41,800 for transition courses to solve real-world, on-campus sustainability problems.

The Sustainability Executive Committee (SEC) chiefly guides sustainability action at SSU with significant input from numerous faculty, staff and students; and from both operations and academic departments. Now in its 3rd year and operates under the aegis of the Office of the President, Associated Students, and the Academic Senate. The SEC is led by the Director of Sustainability, is administered through the Office of Academic Affairs reporting to Provost Andrew Rogerson and made up of representatives from Facilities, Residential Life, Faculty, the Directors of the Center for Environmental Inquiry and the Center for Community Engagement, Dining Services and students.

A brief description of each sustainability officer position:

Working with the SSU Sustainability Executive Committee (SEC) and the Sustainability Work Group, the Director is ultimately responsible for helping to infuse sustainability awareness in the curriculum. This might involve encouraging, soliciting, and enhancing active participation in sustainability-related projects by students, faculty, staff, and community partners, and fostering cross-departmental and cross-division efforts needed to address sustainability issues. As the chair of the Sustainability Executive Committee, the director will work collaboratively with the group to determine priorities, initiatives and activities on an annual basis. The director also oversees the Sustainable SSU website.
