A brief description of the institution’s green infrastructure and LID practices:
Smith College works to mitigate storm water runoff through the use of several practices, including infiltration systems, detention systems, green roofs, and capturing rain water for re-use. Areas of green roof exist on Ford Hall and Cutter and Ziskind houses.
In 2019, the permeability of the campus was measures as part of the development of a new landscape master plan. At least 66% of our campus is permeable.
We have implemented a small permeable pavement parking lot on campus as an educational tool and demonstration site in order to see if permeable pavement can be more widely used on campus. We have also implemented a permeable paver parking lot at MacLeish Field Station, which is also a learning and demonstration site.
