It is the practice of Smith College Facilities Management and the Capital Projects group to specify that all new construction and significant renovation qualify for LEED Silver certification or better.
After Smith College President Carol Christ signed the American College and University President’s Climate Commitment in November 2007, Smith College committed that all new campus construction be built to at least the U.S. Green Building Council’s LEED Silver standard or equivalent.

As a tangible action under the ACUPCC, Smith committed to LEED Silver or equivalent, as a minimum standard for construction projects. New buildings are built to at least LEED Silver standards, whether certification is pursued or not. The Nancy and Henry Schacht Center for Health and Wellness, which is 12,000 sq, is LEED Silver equivalent. The Paradise Road student apartments are LEED Gold, and the Cutter and Ziskind Houses are awaiting LEED certification at either the Silver or Gold levels.
