Slippery Rock University offers Green Fund Grants that can be used to fund professional development for creating/broadening sustainability curriculum. Positive outcomes included the development of two new courses:
1. Environmental Problems: This course covers environmental problems and now includes the sustainable solutions to the problems.
2. Principles of Sustainability: This course was moved from a 600 level to a 300 level undergraduate course that is now required in the Environmental Studies program.
A brief description of the incentives that faculty members who participate in the program(s) receive:
The Slippery Rock University Green Fund Grant provides funding for sustainability activities on campus. Requests for proposals are released each fall and spring semester and applicants can apply for up to $20,000 to fund projects, including support for sustainability related professional development. This grant has supported faculty in developing sustainability curriculum. Two faculty members, Dr. Langdon Smith and Dr. Julie Snow received $4150 to attend the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education workshop titled "Sustainability Across the Curriculum". The faculty attended the workshop at Emory College in Atlanta and learned to teach faculty members how to build sustainability components into classes. The faculty members then ran a workshop for Slippery Rock University faculty.
