Does the institution offer at least one sustainability-focused major, degree program, or the equivalent for graduate students (I.e. an interdisciplinary academic program that concentrates on sustainability as an integrated concept)?:
Yes

Name of the sustainability-focused graduate-level degree program:
School of Resource and Environmental Management

A brief description of the graduate-level degree program:

The School of Resource and Environmental Management (REM) provides an opportunity for interdisciplinary research and education on natural resource and environmental issues of local, national, and international interest. REM offers graduate programs in various areas of resource and environmental management and a selection of undergraduate courses that can complement a wide array of undergraduate degrees at SFU.

Graduate programs offered through REM include:

Masters in Resource Management (MRM)
This program is designed for recent graduates from a range of disciplines and for individuals with experience in private organizations or public agencies dealing with natural resources and the environment. Students take an integrated sequence of courses in complementary fields, pursue further courses in their area of specialization in the School and throughout the University, and complete a research project on a topic involving more than one traditional discipline.

The aim is to increase familiarity and competence in understanding the dynamics of natural resources, the strategies and techniques of natural resource and environmental planning and management, and the biological, physical, social, economic and institutional implications of resource decisions. Students also become familiar with various quantitative methods of analysis and aids to decision making. In the field of natural resources, in particular, it is important that an academic program stress problem-solving as well as creative and critical thinking skills, rather than focusing solely on subject matter such as fisheries, resource economics, or forestry.

Masters in Resource Management Planning
The REM planning program is accredited as a recognized planning program by the Canadian Institute of Planners (CIP) and the Planning Institute of B.C. (PIBC) Students who choose to complete the planning program, receive the degree of Master of Resource Management (Planning) and are eligible to apply for candidate membership in the Canadian Institute of Planners and the Planning Institute of B.C. in order to become certified professional planners.

PhD in Resource and Environmental Management
The PhD program in Resource and Environmental Management provides an opportunity for pursuing high-level research and interdisciplinary education in natural resources and environmental management. This degree is intended to be a truly interdisciplinary research degree. Students have to demonstrate core knowledge of Environmental Science, Ecological Economics, and Environmental Policy in a comprehensive exam. Furthermore, their research must incorporate two of these areas.

Master of Science in Ecological Restoration
The MSc in Ecological Restoration combines the strong technical and applied (experiential) knowledge at BCIT with SFU’s fundamental (contextual) basic science and community engagement expertise. The product is a unique joint-degree program that will fundamentally advance both the practice and science of ecological restoration.

Ecological Restoration is a scientific discipline that has recently emerged due to the increasing need to restore degraded and damaged ecosystems. Many ecosystem goods, services, and natural habitats have been severely impacted due to the cumulative impacts of previous and ongoing anthropogenic influences, including for example: urban sprawl, industrial expansion, invasive species, and contamination of soils and water resources. These impacts, and the need to remediate, rehabilitate, and restore habitat for threatened and endangered species, have led to the requirement for ecosystem restoration work across the province, Canada, and internationally. Ecological Restoration is an intentional activity that initiates or accelerates recovery of an ecosystem with respect to its health, integrity, and sustainability.

Note: this is a joint program offered by SFU's Faculty of Environment, in partnership with British Columbia Institute of Technology (BCIT).

Does the institution offer one or more graduate-level sustainability-focused minors, concentrations or certificates?:
Yes

Name of the graduate-level sustainability-focused minor, concentration or certificate:
Development and Sustainability Graduate Certificate

A brief description of the graduate minor, concentration or certificate:

This certificate program examines the problems in, processes involved with, and the prospects for the transformation of human, natural, and material resources in various contexts and at various levels of social interaction, from the local, national, and regional to the international/global level. It focuses on socio-economic, ecological, and technological changes that affect the quality of life of individuals and groups in different environments all over the world. The obstacles to sustainable social and ecological transformation are large but the pressures are urgent and the issues usually transcend the boundaries of conventional academic disciplines.

The Development and Sustainability Graduate Certificate connects faculty who teach and undertake research across the university, and enables students to coordinate their graduate studies to concentrate on development issues, using a multidisciplinary approach. Students graduate with a regular graduate degree offered by their home units (masters or doctorate), plus a graduate certificate that recognizes their concentration in the field of development and sustainability studies.

Post Baccalaureate Diploma in Sustainable Community Development

A brief description of the graduate minor, concentration or certificate (2nd program):

The Sustainable Community Development Post Baccalaureate Diploma (“post bac” or PBD) is a program designed for those who already have an undergraduate degree or the equivalent. It is not a master’s degree, but it is more advanced than a Bachelor’s degree and is an excellent fit for those who are making a major change of field in later life, or who have previously obtained a Bachelor’s degree in another discipline.

This PBD program combines Sustainable Community Development theory and guided practice, plus upper division pre-approved electives from many disciplines permitting students to shape their program to their own interests. This program includes a required, student-designed practicum/project with a community organization.
