The practise of gender-neutral housing has been institutionalized at SFU. Students can elect to live on single gender floors in residence; however the vast majority of residence spaces are gender neutral. On gender-neutral floors, all spaces (including washrooms) are co-ed and shared.

This practice not only helps improve the general safety and cleanliness of shared space it also making filling an empty room rather easy since either gender can live on the floor.
