The Academic Plan asserts the university's goal to integrate itself socially and culturally into the Vancouver community. It expresses an interest in expanding the UniverCity community at Burnaby Mountain, recognizing the importance of the community for both environmental and social sustainability. It emphasizes in numerous goals increasing access to and programming for First Nations students.

All three documents (the Academic Plan, Strategic Research Plan and the Annual Budget) must be viewed together to get the full picture of sustainability planning within the SFU administration.

SFU's strategic planning is carried out through three major documents and summarized in another. Major plans include the Three Year Academic Plan, the Five Year Strategic Research Plan and the Annual Budget. The goals, strategies and indicators set out in these documents are brought together in the University Planning Framework, which clarifies the relationships among various planning goals and ensures a greater level of transparency. The Academic Plan makes an explicit goal of focusing institutional energy and resources on its new Faculty of Environment, which has specific mandate to lead environmental sustainability initiatives in SFU's academic community.The Strategic Research Plan includes sustainability as a research focus for the period 2010-2015. Sustainability, Resources, and Conservation is one of five research themes for 2010-2015. By including this theme, SFU has committed to making sustainability an enduring part of the university’s research infrastructure.
