A brief description of the institution’s workplace health and safety initiatives, including how workers are engaged in monitoring and advising on health and safety programs:
The OHS Policy, which is reviewed and signed annually by Sheridan’s President and CEO expressly states Sheridan’s commitment to creating a healthy and safe working environment for all employees. There are various health and safety programs and initiatives to support the OHS policy. Briefly speaking, the OHS programs can be categorized into: - Hazard Identification and Reviews: annual review of the workplace violence policy and procedure, annual asbestos survey, pre-start review of hazardous processes or equipment, ergonomic assessments, etc. - Training: Some of the examples include employee health and safety orientation training that inform employees of common hazards found in the workplace, asbestos awareness training, WHMIS, working at heights, etc. - Control Measures: proactive asbestos abatement, hazardous waste management, physical/procedural improvements to eliminate/reduce hazards, personal protective equipment program, etc. Managers are encouraged to work with the employees when addressing workplace hazards by seeking their input and advice. Employees have a legislated right to participate in health and safety matters in the workplace. The Joint Health and Safety Committee, which is comprised of both management and employee members, actively monitor the health and safety programs and inspect the workplace (including interviewing employees) to ensure employees are engaged in identifying and resolving health and safety issues at work.
