A brief description of the green laboratory program, including the specific initiatives selected above:
Energy conservation – The fume hood sash is shut at the end of each day or when not in use for the labs. RO water system pump is turned off at the end of the day and also when labs are not scheduled to run to conserve energy. Chemical Disposal/ Recycling – Hazardous waste is collected in all chemistry labs and is scheduled by OHS for pick up by external company every semester. Some of the chemical waste is treated and recycled in the labs to reduce disposal and purchase costs. Training – Co-op students and new lab techs are trained every semester by a full-time technologist on sustainable practices for chemical and supply usage in the labs. SOPs are designed for training, which can be found on the shared drive used by the Chem group.
