1. Andre Plante, Sheridan’s Associate VP of Corporate Planning, is part of the City of Mississauga’s Environmental Advisory Committee. The Environmental Advisory Committee (EAC) has been established to advise City Council with respect to policy issues and practices related to conservation programs, new corporate initiatives, energy use and development of an environmental plan for the City. Andre was appointed by Sheridan’s top administrators and/or governing bodies to serve on the committee.
2. Sheridan College is a supporting member engaged in the City of Mississauga’s LGMP Process which is Mississauga’s Environmental Master Plan. The Plan is primarily a document to prioritize City policies and programs into action to meet environmental objectives. The Sheridan stakeholder(s) were appointed by Sheridan’s top administrators and/or governing bodies. Sheridan is also working with the City of Mississauga on their Climate Action Plan.

3. Herb Sinnock, Manager of Sustainable Energy Systems and Sheridan’s Office for Sustainability, is a member of Burlington’s Sustainable Development Committee. The Committee’s role in the community is to promote principles and objectives of sustainable development and to advise and assist City Hall and staff and City Council members on these issues. Organized conferences and workshops as well as submitted position papers help achieve this. One of the Committee’s objectives is to encourage the development of Efficient Urban Design. This encompasses: increasing efficiency of land use in the urban community in terms of energy and time; and promoting policies that encourage intensification and diversification rather than policies that generate urban sprawl.

A brief description of how the institution engages in public policy advocacy for sustainability at the state/provincial/regional level, including the issues, legislation, and ordinances for or against which the institution has advocated:
In January 2018, Sheridan College participated in submitting comments to the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change regarding Ontario’s Proposed Food and Organic Waste Framework. The comments included: recommendations for incentivising reducing dependence on natural gas use of any kind, including methane from anaerobic digestion, by focusing policy on composting; strengthening language by using “shall” rather than “should;” asking for clarification on definitions of terms; comments on how to improve calculation of baseline; and much more. The feedback was provided through the Ontario College and University Professionals Network.
