Forest Stewardship Council Certification

A brief description of the institution’s featured program, initiative, or accomplishment:
Management of the University's land is guided by a comprehensive management plan completed in 2019, in partnership with The Nature Conservancy and the Forest Stewards Guild. All activities are certified sustainable through the Forest Stewardship Council, the gold standard in ecological forestry. Students take part in both the planning and implementation of all aspects of management including: harvest planning and inventory, prescribed fire, and exotic species management. Students participate in our management implemented to improve wildlife habitats, protect fragile species and ecosystems, and set an example of exemplary forest management in the region.

Green Box Program

A brief description of the second program/initiative/accomplishment:
Our dining hall, is self operated and not a "to-go" operation. COVID was particularly challenging seating and feeding with single-use containers. Dining implemented the their own sustainable reusable program with the Green Boxes. Sewanee Dining began using reusable to-go containers at the end of August 2020 when students couldn’t all be seated in McClurg. The boxes are “checked out” and returned, and in the first six-week period kept almost 34,000 single-use containers out of the landfill.
