A brief description of the institution’s formal community partnership to advance sustainability:
The University and Office of Civic Engagement ( www.sewanee.edu/offices/oce/) have a formal relationship with the South Cumberland Community Fund (SCCF) to support community development. That arrangement involves hiring a single director of community development who oversees the grantmaking and community building to increase the prosperity of the residents of the South Cumberland Plateau. For the Office of Civic Engagement commitment to sustainable development, see: (http://www.sewanee.edu/offices/oce/community-development/). For SCCF's mission statement and grant making activities, see: (www.southcumberlandcommunityfund.org/). The University supports SCCF's projects through grantmaking support, funding the director of community development, and administering the shared South Cumberland Plateau AmeriCorps VISTA Intermediary site (http://www.sewanee.edu/offices/oce/south-cumberland-plateau-vistas-project/).
Social equity is supported through various VISTA assignments in the school system and health care. Economic prosperity is supported through VISTA and grant support of Betterfi.co, a non-profit lending agency offering an alternative to payday loans. Ecological health is supported through a grant to Friends of the South Cumberland Parks and on-going support of the local Mountain Goat Trail--a 40-mile rails to trails project. As for community representation, the SCCF board and grants committee has members from the local community, and the AmeriCorps VISTA program has a community advisory council with 50% representation of low-income residents who are clients of organizations that sponsor a VISTA member.
