The University of the South has the Office of Environmental Stewardship and Sustainability, which was created in 2012. This office consists of the Sustainability Program, Domain Management, the University Farm, and the Sewanee Headwaters Initiative. The Sustainability Program serves as a resource to shepherd awareness about stewardship and sustainability and to catalyze change. The program focuses on broad array of campus life including: energy, food, water, waste, buildings, materials management, transportation, socially responsible investments, and the curricular engagement of the these challenges.
The University Farm's focus is on sustainable agriculture and education, while Domain Management's focus in on sustainable ecosystems in our forested landscape.

Primary Function Develop implementation strategies for University initiatives in environmental
stewardship and sustainability. Coordinate program development and institutional
capacity in sustainability. Holistically and strategically integrate demonstration,
research and management of the greater Domain for the public good.
Typical Duties & Responsibilities 1. Lead planning for the larger scale
thematic and finer grained recreational, educational and research use of the greater Domain (the area outside the core campus and leaseholds). This effort includes program development as well as physical and electronic infrastructure development as needed, and management of the Domain 3D project.
2. Coordinate the University’s efforts in implementation of sustainability goals for
excellence in sustainability by promoting sustainability goals across the University and
through and beyond the curriculum.
3. Working with staff in LITS and the spatial laboratory, coordinate, complete, and
maintain databases for past, present, and future educational and research activities on
the greater Domain, for historical landuses
on the Domain, and for past and future
forest inventories
4. Working with staff in LITS and the spatial laboratory, maintain and update databases
for field monitoring of baseline ecological information including RTE species, invasive
species, and community distributions. Develop technological capacities to facilitate
data capture and data utilization in the field.
5. Facilitate, and assist in maximizing the impact of, research on the greater Domain by
faculty and students, increasing over time, by: 1) serving as a primary point of contact for those at the University and elsewhere who wish to initiate projects on the greater
Domain; 2) developing relationships with research faculty at graduate institutions,
conservation and land management agencies in the region to facilitate grant supported
research on the greater Domain and in our region to generate collaborative opportunities for Sewanee faculty and students; 3) communicate to potential users the planning and direction of implementation; and 4) ensure consultative, professional relationships with users through a regular – at least annual – process of soliciting feedback and advice.
(Note that facilitation will occur primarily through planning, infrastructure development,
and sharing of relevant expertise as requested. Since the position is not a teaching or
research faculty position, the teaching or research interests of the incumbent, and any
work directly with students toward those interests, must be secondary to the primary
duties and responsibilities.)
6. As requested and increasing over time, develop and coordinate programs developing
the cocurricular interests of undergraduate students in sustainability and Domain
planning, use, and infrastructure, as for example an Undergraduate Fellowship/”Green
Corps” and Sustainability Fellows programs.

Primary Function
To foster and support Sewanee’s sustainability initiatives through collaboration, leadership, and partnering throughout the campus community.
Typical Duties & Responsibilities
1. Provide leadership and vision to create, foster, lead and implement campus-wide initiatives that will promote and assist student led sustainability movements on campus, priorities of the University, and the OESS office.
2. Support and communicate with various operational staff members to create and
prioritize institutional goals, create student opportunities, and further develop sustainability reporting.
3. Provide oversight and direction for the Sustainability Fellows program and encourage growth by seeking new and innovative projects that foster relationships and involvement among all educational majors.
4. Serve as the Office of Environmental Stewardship and Sustainability point of contact for marketing and communication. These efforts include overseeing the content, design, and maintenance of the Sustain Sewanee web portal, the OESS website, and social media sites.
5. Supervise the Student Sustainability Coordinator and provide direction and oversight.
6. Develop specific programs to meet the needs of the larger sustainability program that
allow it grow with the needs of the student body.
7. Manage the University’s Sustainability Tracking and Assessment Rating System (STARS) status; update the submission at least every three years to keep its information current; disseminate and communicate its results; and, identify means and methods for continuous improvement.
8. Provide leadership and direction for updating the Sustainability Master Plan.
9. Facilitate the participation of students and staff in national sustainability organizations and meetings, specifically, but not exclusively, Planet Forward, and Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education (AASHE).
