1st campaign

Name of the campaign:
Friendlier - Reusable Container Program

A brief description of the campaign:
Seneca introduced the Friendlier reusable containers at Newnham campus during the summer semester of 2023. The purpose of the program is to eliminate all single-use containers at Seneca’s cafeterias and change them to reusable containers that can last up to 100 uses. The containers are made in Ontario of recyclable and BPA plastic by a company owned by women.

The campaign to communicate the program to students and employees was launched in May 2023. Dining Services worked closely with Seneca’s Marketing and Communications department to leverage our internal communication channels to increase the visibility of the program and ensure compliance. The channels used were the digital screens around Newnham Campus that are in each building (on going); creating a reel on Seneca’s main Instagram account (62 k followers), and the Office of Sustainability's Instagram account to explain how the program worked. Signage was also added at the cafeteria; and an article was published on our employee and student digital spaces.

A brief description of the measured positive impact(s) of the campaign:
During the first two weeks of the program and campaign’s launch, Seneca was able to reuse 2239 containers, which diverted 376 GHG, 139 kg of waste and save 18123 L. of water.

The impact of the programs continues, from May 14 to July 23, 2023, Seneca reused 12014 containers, that diverted 2018 GHG, 697 kg of waste and save 97246 L. of water.
