Since fall 2017, Selkirk College and Fortis BC have partnered to divert organic waste produced by staff at Fortis's Kootenay Operations Centre from the landfill. Fortis BC janitorial staff deliver 3 bins of organic waste to Selkirk College's Castlegar campus weekly, and Selkirk accepts this material to be composted in the College's onsite Earth Tub unit.

The Kootenay Society for Community Living has had the contract to manage recycling at the Castlegar campus for over a decade and is responsible for emptying the recycling stations located on Castlegar campus. The program supports social equity, economic prosperity, and ecological health. An underrepresented group of people is being meaningfully employed in a sector that works at minimizing waste on campus. The College supports the partnership by providing a room where recyclables can be cleaned, sorted and organized, and by providing supplies such as bins and bags.

The SOAR (Steps, Opportunities, Academics & Readiness) class at Silver King campus is contracted to handle all comingled recycling and refundables collected on Silver King and Tenth Street campuses. This partnership supports social equity, economic prosperity and ecological health. An underrepresented group of people are meaningfully employed, and the job tasks contributed to waste diversion on Selkirk campuses. This is an ongoing, multi-year partnership.
