Selkirk Native Plant Garden Partnership

A brief description of the innovative policy, practice, program, or outcome that outlines how credit criteria are met and any positive measurable outcomes associated with the innovation:
Students in the Integrated Environmental Planning (IEP) Field school gathered live stakes (willow, red ceanothus etc.) and put them to soak in water for two weeks. During their field school, they built five garden boxes and used soil donated by the City of Castlegar. Stakes were planted in pots, placed in the beds, covered with more soil and an irrigation system and timer were set up. Next year the stakes will be purchase by Columbia Power Corporations for an environmental restoration project which will be implemented by next year's IEP class. This is a collaborative applied project between the College, the City of Castlegar, and multiple years of IEP students. It is the beginning of our Native Plant garden on campus and will be an ongoing fundraiser and field school project for students. This innovative project will be providing hands-on learning experiences multiple years of students, a source of sustainable funding for field schools, and will be contributing to important environmental restoration work in the region.
