One of the primary Grounds Staff at Selkirk College is a certified Organic Master Gardener through Gaia College. She also has a background in environmental science, horticulture, and arboriculture. Although a comprehensive sustainable landscape management plan has not been established at Selkirk College, the Grounds crew uses a variety of ecological practices to maintain the grounds:
- grass clippings and fallen leaves are piled for compost additions
- trees are monitored regularly and pruned strategically to manage pest infestations (ie. caterpillars) rather than using pesticides
- Very little irrigation takes place on the grounds; lawns are oversown with drought tolerant grass seed
- fabric, mulch, and mechanical labour are the primary methods of weed control
