A brief description of the method(s) used to gather data about student commuting:
In March-April 2023, a campus-wide survey was conducted to assess current commuting patterns. The survey remained open for six weeks. With 1797 responses, 21% of SU’s campus members (students and employees) responded to the commuting survey of 2023 (Table 1). Response rates were statistically significant for all groups: 45% of all staff, 32% of all faculty and 17% of all students responded to the survey.
The survey collected the following data for staff/faculty/students: % of total one-way trips per mode of transportation (single occupancy vehicle; single occupancy vehicle hybrid; single occupancy vehicle electric; carpool; carpool hybrid; carpool electric; motorcycle or scooter; bus; light rail; streetcar; commuter rail; ferry; bicycle; walk); average number of one-way trips per week per commuter; average number of weeks traveled per commuter; average miles per one-way trip per commuting mode.
